The cute, young couple, (ok, not so young) pictured above are Bonham, Texas residents Rachel & Tony Hernandez. Both have dirt track racing backgrounds that go decades past.
I (Tony) was brought into the racing sport at the ripe age of 7, at Devils Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, TX. Over the years, I have been a fan, crew member, racer, concession stand worker, back stretch line up person, track tow worker, and then Flagman for 15 years before leaving the track.
Over the years I bounced around working other tracks, making my way to many Longhorn Round-Ups, Chili Bowls and now I make my home with the Sprint Series of Texas.
Rachel also started as a fan later in life. She then moved on to car owner for several years being successful. Since 2005, Rachel has became a solid race official for the SST group under Smiley Sitton as well as trying to keep me in line with the YGS and her duties with the series.
In May of 2007, a good friend and long time racer, Rusty Trevathan and I engaged on a conversation about his son, 14 yr old Rusty Jr, racing against kids he never got a chance to race against. Rusty Jr had made talk that racing for trophies against the same 4 kids every week wasn't fun. These same words rang out from kids all over the region.
I wanted to see Rusty Jr, who raced at Superbowl Speedway weekly, race against a few kids from other local area tracks. Shelby Williams from Grayson County Speedway, Chris Miller from Thunderbird Speedway, Devin Burgess from Kennedale Speedway Park and Brandon Ruffin from Kennedale Speedway Park.
If this was going to happen, we needed to make it happen! The tracks in the area had yet to make attempt to pull all the kids together.
We did pull it off and the series it has turned into runs strong today with over 90 different racers on our books since we started.
