YGS 2012- Race One:
Going into night one at Roger Archers 85 Speedway we had no clue what to expect. A fine Saturday afternoon, the travelers of the YGS started arriving early, eagerly awaiting the nights events.
Hot laps couldn't come soon enough as a new crop of rookies were on hand for not only their first races ever, but were going to do it against some of the best Jr drivers around. Track was tricky slick, but all 15 Mini Stocks on hand did well.
Heat 1 saw home track 2011 YGS Feature winner Justin Nabors and YGS veteran Trinten Turney from Wolfe City, TX on the front row. When lap one was scored, Bells, TX own Jarred Marquez held the point as did for the following five laps taking the win, followed by Nabors, Turney, and Matt Garrison from Scurry.
Heath, TX resident Cailey Nichols and second year racer Thomas Lunsdford started up front of heat 2 where the #11 of Lunsford took the lead at the green and never looked back. Nichols and Forney driver Calton Pritchett raced hard before Pritchett took that position, Nichols held on for 3rd followed by the #155 of Austin Wanderscheid.
After passing points were tallied, #1 of Marquez grabbed the pole for the A-main with Lunsford on the outside. 'Woe Nelly', YGS Jr Flagman Coby Pritchett gave them the green that Lunsford quickly took advantage of leading lap one with 4th starting Nabors and Marquez hot on his heels. The first caution was brought out on lap 6 where Nabors had mechanical problems that took him out of the race. The restart saw Lunsford, Marquez, Cailey Nichols, Calton Pritchett, and Trinten Turney taking the green.
Lunsford continued his domination though being chased lap after lap, in and out of lap traffic by Marquez and Nichols.
At the end, the Double Checkers were thrown to a crowd pleasing Lunsford, followed by Marquez, Nichols, Hard Charger Austin Wanderscheid, and Trinten Turney.
"I was just waiting for him to bobble so I could take the spot", said Nichols of the #1 Jarred Marquez. If you saw where Cailey started four years ago, you could only appreciate that statement half as much as I!
Big high fives to our 2012 rookies, watch out race fans their time is coming!!!!
